On 19 November 2001, the NGO World Toilet Organization (WTO) was founded by Jack Sim, a Singaporean. He declared 19 November as World Toilet Day.
The World Trade Organization began to push for global recognition of World Toilet Day, and in 2007, the Sustainable Sanitation Alliance also began to actively support World Toilet Day.
The right to water and sanitation was officially declared a human right by the United Nations. It was officially declared by the United Nations General Assembly in 2013.
About World Toilet Organization
The World Toilet Organization is an international non-profit organization committed to improving sanitation and toilet conditions around the world. The organization was started in 2001 with 15 members.
Starting with 15 members our membership has consistently grown and to date we have over 235 organisations operating in 58 countries.
All members of the organization work to eliminate toilet problems and solve sanitation problems around the world. Apart from this, the organizer of the World Toilet Conference is the World Toilet Organization and this organization has started World Toilet Day on behalf of the United Nations.
The organization was founded by Jack Sim on 19 November 2001 in Singapore. It serves as a service platform and global network for UN agencies, academies, toilet associations, toilet stakeholders and government.
Since its creation, it has joined together the private sector, governments, civil society, academia and multilateral agencies to find sustainable and transformative solutions to end the global sanitation crisis.
Its mission is to promote the global sanitation movement with collaborative actions that encourage and inspire demand for sanitation and provide innovative solutions to achieve sustainable sanitation for all.

In such a situation, the purpose and message behind celebrating this day is to provide toilet facilities to all the people of the world by 2030. It is noteworthy that this is also one of the 6 Sustainable Development Goals of the United Nations.

According to the United Nations,
More than half of the global population, approximately 4.2 million people, live without safely managed sanitation.
Three billion people or 40% of the global population live without basic amenities including soap and water available at home.
More than 800 children per day, or approximately 297,000 children under the age of five, die annually from diseases caused by poor sanitation, or unsafe drinking water.
Nearly 30 lakh people lack basic handwashing facilities.
The sanitation crisis in untreated human waste is spreading diseases into the water supply and food chain for billions of people.
80% of wastewater generated globally goes back into the ecosystem without being treated or reused.
According to the 2011 Census of India, 67 percent of households in villages and 13 percent in cities defecate in the open.
According to the NGO Research Institute, 40 percent of households in the country have toilets, yet one member of each household regularly defecates in the open.
By 2050, 5.7 billion people could live in areas with at least one water shortage per month.
According to the United Nations,
Decreased water productivity and sanitation-related diseases cost individual countries up to 5% of GDP.
