Lainey Wilson made history by winning the CMA Awards Entertainer of the Year Award for 2023. She is one of only ten artists to win this award on their first nomination. Additionally, she is the third female artist to achieve this on her first nomination, following in the footsteps of Shania Twain and Taylor Swift.
Wilson is the first female artist since Taylor Swift to win Entertainer of the Year, Vocalist of the Year, and Album of the Year in the same year. She is one of eight women to ever win the Entertainer of the Year Award, along with Dolly Parton, Reba, Loretta, Taylor, and Carrie Underwood. Wilson won a total of five CMA Awards that evening.
Heading into the award show, Wilson had the most nominations of any artist for the evening with a total of nine. In her acceptance speech for Entertainer of the Year, Wilson shared, “This is all I’ve ever wanted to do, it’s the only thing I know how to do.”
She said that the number nine is her lucky number. She mentioned being nominated for the CMAs nine times this year. It is also the year when she wrote her first song and got her first pair of bell bottoms. She recalls her parents bringing her to Nashville for the first time and taking her to the Grand Ole Opry. Additionally, it was the year when her parents brought home a horse named Tex, which needed to be tamed. They put her on the horse’s back and told her to hold on tight and ride.
Wilson thanked the audience for allowing her to be herself.
